2012 Maine Rebels Coaching Staff Announced

With Many Familiar Faces

The Maine Rebels are expecting great things from their 2012 coaching staff.

The Rebels will be lead by 2nd year head coach Jon Bastian.  Coach Bastian came on late last year taking over the head

coach position shortly before the start of the season.   He is looking forward to being involved from the very beginning this season.   Coach Bastian came to the Rebels with an impressive resume which includes several years experience coaching successful high school programs.

Coach Bastian will be supported by an experienced group of assistant coaches.

The Rebels are very excited about the return of coach Andre Lacey. Coach Lacey also has several years experience coaching at the high school level.   Coach Lacey’s main focus will be working with the wide receivers and defensive backs.

Returning from last season will be Wayne Aspinall.  Coach Aspinall was a great help last year as he wore several different hats.  This year Coach Aspinall will be concentrating on coaching and will be responsible for the running backs and line backers.  Coach Aspinall has been involved in Oxford Hills football and wrestling youth program for many years.

Making the transition from player to coach this year is Mindy Gilliam.  Coach Gilliam was a long time fixture on the offensive and defensive line for the Rebels.  Her dedication to being a fundamentally sound player and ability to teach make her a great candidate for the Offensive and defensive line coach.

Also transitioning from player to coach is Gloria Verrill.  Coach Verrill has played for the rebels for four years.  Her experience coaching various high school varsity sports will help her take on the role as one of the strength and condition coaches.  Sharing the duties with her will be John Grimaldi.  Coach Grimalidi is a personal trainer in the Scarborough area.

The Rebels are also happy to have Greg Morse and Jim Bouchard as part time volunteer coaches this year.  Coach Morse is no stranger to women’s football.  He was part of the coaching staff during the inaugural season of the Maine Freeze.  However, Coach Morse was unable to finish out the season due to moving to Nebraska to play for the Tri City Diesel arena football team.  Coach Bouchard will be working with the Rebels kickers. Coach Bouchard has several years experience as a kicker.  He is the special team coach for the Hyde School in Bath and has coached for Southern Maine Raging Bulls.  They are both looking forward to what their experiences can bring to the team.

The Rebels this year will have the expertise Bates College Defensive Coordinator Chris Kempton.  Coach Kempton will be part of the 2012 coaching staff as a consultant.  The Rebels are excited to have Coach Kempton on board to tap into his extensive football knowledge.  Coach Kempton was Rebels head coach in 2004 and 2005, with a playoff appearance in 2005.

Boyce Returns from Injury for 2012

The Maine Rebels are excited to have 14 year veteran Bethany Boyce back on the field for 2012. Her season was cut short in 2011 due to a knee injury. Boyce is one of longest playing female football players in the State of Maine. The Rebels organization has high expectations for Boyce and her ability to excel on the field. Boyce stated the following about her return, “I am looking forward to building on what we had started last season, with the talented coach that we have. I have fully recovered from the MCL tear that ended my season last year and looking forward to making an impact on the field in 2012.

Rebels Minicamp rescheduled due to Scarborough High School Red Storm Football earning playoff spot.

The Maine Rebels will be rescheduling their minicamp this coming Saturday due to Rebels’ head coach Jon Bastian and Scarborough High School Red Storm football team making the 2011 Maine High School Football Playoffs.

The Storm took destiny into their own hands by beating Gorham High School 41-12 Friday night securing their playoff spot.  This will be Scarborough second year in row qualifying for post season play.  Last year Scarborough fell to 2010 Class A state champion Cheverus High School in the quarter finals with a 14 to 21 score.

Scarborough is headed into a rematch of last year’s game on Saturday Oct. 29th at Cheverus HS time TBD.  The Rebels organization will be there to support their coach and cheer on the Red Storm.

“We are excited to have Coach Bastian returning as head coach for the Maine Rebels 2012 season,” stated owner Ruth Murphy.  This will be Coach Bastian second year at the Rebels helm and he is dedicated to putting together a highly qualified coaching staff that can take the Rebels to the next level.

Coach Bastian himself has many years of coaching experience in very successful programs.  He has coached several players that have achieved all league and all star status as wells as going on to play at the college level.

The Minicamp is tentatively rescheduled for Sunday 10/30 1pm at Deering High School Practice Field.  Please check website www.mainerebels.com or Facebook page for updates.

Welcome Back Melissa Cash!
Maine Rebels announce the return of Melissa Cash for the 2012 season. Cash’s rookie season was cut short due to a broken rib. Former head coach Andre Lacey stated, “Cash is very green, but a sponge who’s willing to be coached and has great potential.” Current Rebels staff is excited to have Cash back and impressed with her combine scores. There is high expectation for what Cash can do on the field this season.
Rebels’ player Frankie Curtis takes 1st place in New England/Colonial States USGWA "Fall Classic" wrestling Championships
Retuning veteran player Frankie Curtis took first place in her division in the New England Colonial States USGWA Fall Classic Wrestling Championship. Curtis will be returning to the 2012 Maine Rebels roster after missing two seasons due to being station over in Iraq. The Maine Rebels are happy for her safe return and are grateful for her and her company’s willingness to serve their country. Before leaving for Iraq Curtis was a force on the football field. She was a standout offensive guard and defense end. Rebels head Coach Jon Bastian stated, “Curtis has a motor that doesn’t quit. The only way to get her off the field is to end the game. She has a heart of a lion and the tenacity of a pit bull. Curtis is the motor that drives the defense. Teams have to know where she is at all times in order to try and succeed. With Curtis the Rebels have a true game changer.”

#7 Sam Sargent
Sargent signs for 2012
Samantha Sargent has signed for the Maine Rebels 2012 season. Sargent had an outstanding rookie year, including being selected to the Independent Women’s Football League All-star team.  Sargent and her East teammates rolled over the West team 21-0. During the all star game Sargent had a fumble recovery and a key block on a kick return.  In 2011 Sargent anchored the Rebels secondary as free safety and stepped up to take on some running back duties later in season. Coach Jon Bastian stated, “Sargent is a fantastic athlete. She comes to every practice and game prepared to give her best. She is a sponge when it comes to being a student of football. This coming year she will be a cornerstone of a solid foundation to build a good team and will help bring the Rebels to the next level.”
